Just a little look at some of key players to watch out for during the season from the Dayton Public School league:
1. Dunbar High School:
Dunbar did not return to Columbus only after losing seniors, AJ Harris (2015) and Doriane Dawson (2015). The Wolverines lost Terrance Landers (2016) who will be playing football at Purdue University. This upcoming year, Dunbar will be returning Devon Baker (2018) who has interest from Wright State University, OU, Northern Kentucky and University of Dayton. They also will be returning Caleb McConnell and Storm Cook. Dunbar finished 16-8 last season.
Devon Baker (2018) – Point Guard/ Shooting Guard – 6’1 – Can get to the basket with no problem off the dribble. He can even pull up for a short jump shot. He is really aggressive on offense as well as defense. He has no problem stopping his man from scoring.
Caleb McConnell (2018) – Point Guard/ Shooting Guard – 6’5 – athletic guard, usually a mismatch against guard because of his height and big men because of his ability to get to the rim and score off the dribble. Interest from Notre Dame, Florida, Ohio State, Xavier, Illinois State, Indiana, Liberty and Wichita State. Offers from Ohio University, Bethune-Cookman, Wright State and University of Toledo.
Storm Cook (2017) – Point Guard – Transferred into Dunbar from Piqua last season and made an impact right away. Has the ability to get to the rim off the dribble but mostly showed his ability to knock down the 3-Pointer.
Chris Jackson – 6’2 (2017) – Has been playing at the varsity level for 3 years now. Had made some big plays before for Dunbar by hitting big shots in crucial moments of the game. Can get to the rim and shoot from the perimeter. Also shows his ability to play defense and guard his man the full length of the court and rebound on the offensive and defensive side of the ball.
2. Ponitz Career Tech High School
Ponitz is loaded with talent. They have had the same core of kids from their freshman year and are going into their senior year now. Ponitz has been an upcoming program rising with talent. They get after it from the beginning to the end.
Floyd Scott (2017) – Power Forward/Center – 6’4 – Very aggressive in the post. Plays excellent post defense, grabs rebounds on both ends of the court, and can also shoot from the perimeter. Players will have trouble guarding him because he can be a mismatch with his quickness.
De’Edger Cooks (2017) – Shooting Guard – 6’2 – Has no problem with scoring the basketball. He will shoot from the perimeter if the defender allows it and he will get to the rim if the jump shot isn’t open. Extremely aggressive on offense. His lengthy arms allow him to make plays on the defensive end as well blocking shots and deflecting passes.
Jalen Garrett (2017) – Point Guard – 6’0 – Very composed when dealing with pressure. Knows where the ball needs to go every time he decides to penetrate the lanes. Can knock down the deep three consistently if left open. Has interest shown from Manchester University.
3. Meadowdale High School
Meadowdale will be very young this season only having four seniors. Meadowdale gets after it defensively and they aren’t afraid to take it at you with fast paced offense. Meadowdale finished 11-10.
Brandon Mccoy (2017) – Point Guard – 5’9 – Pass first point guard. Looks to get out and run in transition and make the correct pass for the easy bucket. Quick of defense as well.
Jabali Reynolds (2018) – Shooting Guard – 6’1 – Very aggressive on both sides of the court. Attacks aggressively on offense and gets after it on defense. Transferred in from Dayton Dunbar.
4. Belmont High School
Belmont is the team that is always looked over. They get after it on defense by being very quick and physical. They have a few talented players who transferred in and they have their returning senior point guard, Kajuan Ford who has been controlling the tempo of the team since his freshman year.
Kajuan Ford (2017) – Point Guard – 5’8 – Very shifty and has a flashy style of play. Very strong with handling the basketball and can get to the rim and finish. He also has no problem guarding players the full length of the court. Is receiving interest from Division I schools.
Jadon Rucker (2018) – Small Forward – 6’1 – Very athletic. Rebounds and challenges buckets on defense. On the offensive end, he has no problem getting lay ups or getting most of his points from offensive rebounds.
5. Thurgood Marshall High School
Thurgood lost a handful of talent last season. Evan Clayborn, Darnell Hoskins Jr., and Derrick Daniels all were seniors. This year they will have a small team but they will be quick. They have a new head coach this season, Shawn McCullough who left Stivers School for the Arts.
Amir Farid (2017) – Point Guard – 5’10 – Rugged style player. Backs down from no one at all. He will go at you on both ends of the floor and will capitalize if he knows he can have his way. Quick on his feet on the defensive end but can also score the basketball.
6. Stivers School for the Arts
Stivers bring excitement to the city league. They always have a sell-out crowd. Stivers is usually a young roster averaging maybe only 3 seniors a season. Stivers is the only Division III team in the Dayton Public School league.
Miles Clark (2017) – Point Guard – 5’10 – Very shifty point guard. Well balanced style of play. He can score as well as get assist. He is a pass first guard but his teammates would like him to shoot more because he has the ability to score wherever. He is hands on when he is on defense. Very active hands that causes turnovers for the other team.
