10 Best: Greenfield School vs Parrott Academy (Free)
In this edition of PrepHoops 10 Best, highlighted is a recent game between Greenfield School (Wilson, NC) and Parrott Academy (Kinston, NC).
This game had a ton of intrigue surrounding it. We knew coming into the game that Greenfield guard Coby White was the real deal. Guys don’t get offers as an underclassmen from the University of North Carolina for nothing.
We already knew Dorieon Suggs is one of the most underrated forwards in the NC 2017 Class. What surprised me the most was the play of Parrott Academy junior guard Kris Wooten, Greenfield junior guard Elijah McCadden and Parrott freshman guard JJ Williams.
In a game that wasn’t necessarily a nail-biter down the stretch, there were still a few good takeaways. Early on, Parrott’s Kris Wooten came out on fire! He poured in 17 first quarter points at home, drilling 5 three pointers in the process.
However, Greenfield slowly began to impose their will and inched away little by little each growing quarter. Parrott sophomore Harrison McLawhorn (6’7”) made a few nice hustle plays as well as senior guard Patrick Mayo early in the 3rd that made things interesting. In the end, the size and athleticism from Greenfield was a little too much.
Greenfield guards Coby White and Elijah McCadden along with Dorieon Suggs began to take control of the glass and get to the line, pulling away by double digits. Despite the outcome, there were plenty of positives to note from both teams.
Play of the Game: Dorieon Suggs – 6’5′ F (Greenfield) 17′
Midway through the first quarter, Parrot Academy scored on a quick halfcourt set. However, they got back just a little late. Dorieon sprinted out in transition, caught the ball, took two dribbles and slammed it home hard over a defender, drawing a foul in the process! Definitely the most memorable play in the game.
Best Offensive Performance: Coby White – 6’4” PG (Greenfield) 18′
Despite having somewhat of an off-night, White still proved why he is so highly regarded. With his shot falling short, White, a 6’4” point guard, made it an issue to get into the paint and score at the charity stripe. He also passed the ball extremely well, keeping his teammates much involved in the offense. His unselfishness is an underrated aspect of his offense.
Best Rebounder: Harrison McLawhorn – 6’7” PF/C (Parrott) 19′
Harrison is a natural when it comes to rebounding the ball. Should he continue to get stronger and quicker off his feet, he could become downright scary on the glass. Has good size, great reflexes, boxes out strong and possesses a solid overall knowledge of where to be when the ball comes off the rim. Expect him to be a double-double threat for years to come.
Best Defensive Performance: Elijah McCadden – 6’5” CG (Greenfield) 18′
Standing 6’5” with long arms, good lateral quickness and some good bounce, Elijah wreaked havoc on defense all night. He grabbed rebounds in and out of position. Also frustrated ball handlers and used his quick hands to knock away the ball on several occasions while playing defense in the post. Has the potential to be a bigtime two-way player.
Best Guy Off The Bench: Djimon Bailey – 5’11” PG (Greenfield) 20′
This young freshman has some potential. He does those small things that keep you on the floor as a young ballplayer. Hustled hard on defense, didn’t force the issue offensively and made the right plays. No homerun plays. Was pulling double-duty having recently played on the junior varsity. Gaining much valuable experience.
Best Under-The-Radar Performance: Kris Wooten – 6’1” SG (Parrott Academy) 18′
Wooten came out of nowhere in this game! After a quiet first 2 minutes, the 6’1” shooting guard went on to bury 5 straight 3 pointers to end the quarter, finishing with 17 in the period overall. He’s a pure shooter from long and deep-range. Underrated as a ball-handler as well. Crafty dribbling the ball and works well in the pick and roll. In 2018, he’ll immediately improve the shooting of any college team.
Best Intangibles: Octavious Lacey – 6’4” G/F (Greenfield) 18′
Octavious was a good athlete in this game that somehow always ended up around the ball. Get several tip-back layups each game, rebounds well for his size (6’4”), has good length and keeps his head up, making good passes in the half-court settings. With his size, skill and athleticism, he could very well end time put it all together and become a solid two-way threat.
Best Underclassmen: JJ Williams – 5’8” PG (Parrott Academy) 20′
Williams came into the game and Parrott didn’t miss a beat with him running the offense. He showed off a solid repertoire of dribble drive moves and got into the paint several times, despite not being an imposing athlete. He makes really solid passes, takes great care of the basketball and knocks down shots from the outside. A guard to definitely keep an eye out for in the future.
Best Catch & Shoot Player: AJ Banker – 6’3” SG (Parrott Academy) 18′
Despite Kris Wooten obviously being in contention for this award after knocking down 5 triples, AJ Banker himself is no slouch in catch and shoot situations. He gets great lift on his jump-shot, has good size at the two-guard spot and moves extremely well off of the ball. Look for him to bury a ton of jumpers over the course of the season.
