A slick guard with sharpshooting ability, Anderson explained to PHIA his current recruitment situation.
“Actually I’ve seen a lot of recruitment lately, lots of D2 schools and D3 schools, and I’ve had really subtle interest from a couple D1 schools. I had lunch with the Wartburg coach recently and I’ve had lots of interest from Harding in Arkansas,” said Anderson.
“Cornell (IA) has been starting to recruit me a little bit more. There’s a little bit of NAIA too, Concordia in Nebraska has been recruiting me pretty heavily for awhile now. But right now I have my sights set on a few D3 schools, lots of D2 schools, and if I have a good season hopefully some low-major D1 schools by the end of the year.”
Though the junior guard still has plenty of time for Anderson to showcase himself, he says recruitment is something he thinks about often.
“I’m paying a lot of attention to it and I’m talking with my family a lot about recruitment,” he said. “In another year I’m hoping to have a couple offers from the schools that are recruiting me right now.”
After what he describes a sub-par sophomore season with the Trojans’ sophomore squad, Anderson has been working hard in the gym to make sure he’s prepared for his junior season with our preseason No.1 squad.
“My sophomore season wasn’t very great, so that’s really motivated me a lot,” he said. “So I’ve been in the gym at 5:30 in the morning three times a week working on ball-handling and getting to the rim. I’ve seen a lot of improvement at finishing at the rim and I’ve gotten a little bigger since last year, so that’s made it easier to finish.”
Like many other kids that have gone through the Iowa City West juggernaut over the past couple of decades, Anderson – though very talented – will have to scrap for playing time this season. He’d likely be a starter at a slew of other 4A schools in the state.
He laid out for us what it’s like playing in such a loaded program.
“Honestly it’s a challenging and interesting thing to be on this team. I get to be at practice with these guys everyday and I get to be exposed to all that talent and all that strength and size. But on the other hand it’s hard to get playing time because of all the D1 talent,” said Anderson, who mentioned his goals for this season.
“I think I’ll get some playing time, and my goal is to be sixth or seventh man. My job will be to play tough defense, take care of the ball, and I want to be the guy that hits the open shot. When I get an open one, I think I’ll knock it down.”
