Westby was a do-it-all guy for West Central Area High School last season, averaging 15 points, five rebounds and five assists. With his dad getting a job as the superintendent in Sauk Centre, Westby will play his senior season with the Mainstreeters. With his new team, he’s not sure what type of role he’ll have exactly, but given his propensity for making plays, he’ll likely find a way to make a positive impact.
“I played two tournaments and a few summer league games so I’ve gotten to know a lot of the guys and I like them a lot,” said Westby. “They’ve accepted me really well. I think the expectations are pretty high for this upcoming season because they did very well last year.”
At 6-foot-5, Westby played point guard for West Central and he uses that size to his advantage as he excels at getting to the paint and creating shots for himself inside or finding teammates for easy looks. He’s also a strong defender and typically guarded the opposing team’s top players.
Westby wants to play basketball at the next level and said he’s got several schools recruiting him right now.
“I’ve talked to a few schools,” said Westby. “St. Scholastica, [University of Wisconsin] Stout and a few others. I’ve visited Scholastica and would like to visit Stout still too. I’m probably going to see how the season goes. A bigger school like Sauk Centre; maybe that can draw some more attention.”
