Now one of the best senior guards in Iowa, the 5-foot-11 prospect boasts one NAIA offer from Grand View, and several other schools are showing interest.
“I’ve been in contact with Illinois Wesleyan, Augustana (IL), Wisconsin-Platteville, and then a little bit with Briar Cliff as well,” said Johnson, who mentioned he visited Morningside last weekend.
Johnson says he’d like to pick up some Division II interest as his senior season unfolds. And because of that he’ll wait until after the season to make a college decision.
“I’m hoping after this year we’ll see how things play out, and I’m hoping a couple D2s might look at me if I have a good senior season,” said Johnson. “That’s what I’m hoping for, and I’ll most likely make my college decision after the high school season.”
After a stellar junior campaign and a strong offseason on the camp and 17U circuit, Johnson will look to improve during his senior season. He mentioned where he’s made the most progress with his skill-set.
“I’ve really improved my ball-handling and my court awareness. I played a lot of point guard over the summer with my Martin Brothers team, and that’s definitely going to help me this school season too because I’ll be playing the two and the one,” said Johnson.
“I’m definitely going to have to step up as a leader this year and as our team captain. I think it’s important that I stay positive throughout games, and I think all the underclassmen will follow that.”
Waukee is ranked No. 3 in our “Way Too Early” 4A rankings,” and Johnson knows he and his Warriors have a chance to do something special this season.
“We want to get to the state championship and hopefully win state championship. We’re definitely capable,” said Johnson. “We just have a bunch of guys who that are all working hard and we work well together and like each other – so I think it’s going to be a really fun year.”
