Continue ReadingPleasantville senior Brady Elder already has some scholarship options for the next level, but is going to wait a little bit longer to see if he can add to that list.
Grand View and William Penn are the offers, and several other Division III schools are in the mix. Elder is hoping to catch the eye of some Division II programs this winter.
“A lot of the NAIAs in Iowa I can get money from , like Briar Cliff, Clarke, Northwestern, and Graceland, so there’s a lot of NAIA opportunities. And then I still have a lot of D3s in mind, like Buena Vista, Loras and University of Northwestern in Minnesota,” said Elder.
“As far as D2 goes, I had a little bit of interest at the end of the summer, but it hasn’t amounted to any scholarships or anything so I think they’re just waiting to see how my first half of the season goes.”
For now, Elder is targeting January as deadline to make a college decision.
“The timetable is probably middle to late-January. And I just want to find the right place. It doesn’t have to be NAIA, if there’s a D3 school that offers what I want academic-wise and basketball-wise then I would certainly consider that,” said Elder. “It’s just about finding the right place, the level doesn’t necessarily matter.”
The 5-foot-10 scoring guard had the opportunity to play with Iowa’s premier grassroots team this summer, Iowa Barnstormers 17U.
“I think the biggest thing was just becoming a more complete and all-around player. With my high school season I had to score a lot, but with AAU everyone can score, so I can work on a little bit of everything; making the right passes, the right plays, and then just scoring a little bit also,” said Elder.”
“It was a really good opportunity to travel and play with them (Barnstormers). We were playing against the best of the best, and I think that when we come back to Iowa the game slows down a little bit, and you’re able to see things better.”
Last season Elder had one of the better junior seasons of any 2017 player, he averaged 22.5 points and 3.3 assists per game.
This season he’s focused on being the best leader he can be.
“The biggest thing is stepping into a larger leadership role. Last year we had a lot of seniors, and so I’m kind of stepping into that senior leadership role this year,” said Elder. “And I’ll have to score a lot again. And we were 14-8 last year, we want to win more games this year.”
