The good-sized wing averaged 17 points and 8.3 rebounds last season as a sophomore, and spent his summer playing with Omaha Elite’s regional squad.
He’s not gone unnoticed by college programs.
“I’ve had some letters and a couple texts and invites to camps. Grand View has texted, and some D2 schools in Minnesota have invited me to elite camps. It’s mostly D2 and NAIA schools, but I wasn’t able to make it to any of the camps because of football,” said Blum, who is still unsure which sport — football or basketball — he’d like to pursue in college.
“I love football and that’s my focus right now, but I’d have to bulk up a little more to play that in college, and I have another year to that. But I’d have to say basketball is my favorite sport by a little bit. It’s pretty close though.”
With still two full high school seasons left to showcase himself, Blum is not too concerned with his recruitment just yet. But he does know that a school with top-notch academics will be a priority for him.
“It’s starting to hit me about college, they are starting to come to our school and talk to us,” said Blum. “If I did get an offer that would be great, but it’d have to be a school with good enough academics that I like.”
A versatile wing who can hit the deep ball and bang down low, Blum says his grit and his diverse style of play are his best assets as a player.
“I’d say I like to attack the hoop and look for a pull-up. But I like to step out beyond the 3-point line and hit from there,” he said. “I’d say I’m a hustler, I fight for boards and stuff, even if I’m outsized by other people I can be scrappy.”
After a terrific sophomore season with the Rams which followed an outstanding freshman year, Blum seems poised for a very strong 2017.
“I’d like to get more offensive boards this season and not force shots, and just be a better teammate and work hard in the gym,” he said.
“My role is a little bit the same as last year. But we’re only going to have one senior this year, so I’ll have to be one of the main leaders and lead my teammates. I’d say our expectations are pretty high.”
