Continue Reading2018 guard Josh Cottrell comes from a basketball family. His father Michael Cottrell (now coach at Hayesville High School) was a standout at Cullowhee High School near Sylva. He has the record for WNC’s all-time leading scorer among high school players with 2,503 points and led Hayesville to the NCHSAA 1-A state title in 2014 His brother Zach Cottrell was a Big Smoky Mountain Conference Player of the Year every season he was in high school and now plays at Appalachian State University.
The younger Cottrell already has a offer from Western Carolina University (where his grandfather Steve Cottrell coached from 1977-1987). He has a steady list of interest coming from The College of Charleston, Furman, Wofford, Appalachian State, and UT-Chattanooga. He is one of the most underrated guards in the 2018 class and has a high offensive skill set got along with a above average basketball IQ. He has great court vision and is a true pass first point guard. He made 84 three pointers his sophomore season at 46% on the year. Josh had this to say about the upcoming season, ” We’re very excited, looking forward to the new challenges. Our team is working extremely hard to get ready for a really tough conference.”
He averaged nearly 25 points this past summer playing with Storm Elite and was named to the Big Smoky Mountain Conference boys basketball team as voted on by the coaches. The 6-foot-2 guard averaged double figures during his freshman and sophomore seasons at Hayesville High School. His coach had this to say about Josh, “Josh is an excellent student. 4.57 GPA. He is a leader on our team and in our school. I think Josh is developing into a complete player. Can score at all three levels, excellent passer and ball handler, very good on ball defender, he likes to compete. Josh has a strong Christian faith that is very important to him.”
