There may not be a more important player to any team in the state than Green, a dynamic scoring guard who makes everyone around him better. He’s a remarkable offensive player coming off a huge summer playing with one of the nation’s top 16U grassroots teams, the Iowa Barnstormers.
First Team
2018 A.J. Green, Cedar Falls (17.8 points, 3.6 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 1.0 steals, 47.3 FG%, 43.9 3P%, 90.0 FT%)
Green was fantastic in the second half of last season, carried it into the state tournament and then was outstanding during the summer. A silky smooth guard with superb ball handling ability, he’s arguably the toughest player in the state to guard, and his numbers will be eye-popping.
2017 Max Smith-Drahos, Cedar Rapids Prairie (15.2 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 1.6 steals, 45.6 FG%, 81.5 FT%)
The second leading returning scorer in the division, Smith-Drahos is the focal point of a Prairie Hawks team that could surprise some people in the MVC. Capable of scoring from anywhere on the floor, he impacts games on both ends of the floor.
2018 Carter Stevens, Dubuque Senior (13.0 points, 1.8 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 42.9 FG%, 39.4 3P%, 83.0 FT%)
The leading scorer for a Senior team that should contend for another state tournament berth, Stevens is a quick scoring guard who can fill it up in a hurry if he gets going. He’s a good perimeter shooter and lightning fast with the ball in his hands.
2018 Hunter Strait, Cedar Rapids Washington (12.9 points, 3.2 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 1.9 steals)
A flashy point guard who had a sensational summer, Strait has emerged as one of the best point guards not only in the state, but across the Midwest in the 2018 class. One of the best ball handlers around, his shot has greatly improved and he makes players around him better with his superb court vision and passing ability.
2018 Derrick Diggins, Cedar Rapids Kennedy (12.6 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 43.8 FG%, 73.2 FT%)
