It’s always nice to see a youngster that still knows how to play the game the right way in this day and age. There are so many players that attempt to do too much, instead of playing inside the frame of the offense and just doing what coach ask them to do. Well here we have a young man that definitely plays the game the right way in John Newman, he’s already turned quite a few heads over the years and we expect that to even grow more this season. As a freshman he played on a team that would go on to make it to the Dicks Sporting Goods National Championships in New York, although that team was loaded with talent he stepped up and played a solid role throughout the year. During his sophomore season he was called on much more after the departure of the seniors and really showed his ability to score and defend multiple positions. Now going into his junior year we are expecting a big time season from him as Greensboro Day will look to take back the NCISAA 3A championship that was claimed by Providence Day School last year.
What makes him special?
Without a doubt John is one of the best two way players in the state, on the defensive end he locks down and provides constant pressure, forcing opponents into difficult shots. Off the ball he’s just as good, always knowing where the man and the ball is, while coming up with steals playing the passing lanes. On the offensive end he is a much improved shooter, initially his mechanics seemed to be a tad bit awkward but he has smoothed things out and is knocking down shots with consistency. Next we have to talk about his athleticism and competitive nature, you will see in the video below, that he is clearly a high flyer. Regardless of who is under the basket he’s going to attack aggressively and finish, he doesn’t back down from any challenge but at the same time respects every opponent so you have to love that. Last but not least is his how coachable he is, I truly believe John will be a player that can translate to the college level smoothly because he is such a coachable player and a great teammate. Numerous schools have offered already and even more will before much longer, this young man is truly special and will only continue to get better.
