You’ve probably heard of this young man if you paid attention to the high school basketball world in the state of North Carolina over the past year. China Jones played the Power Forward spot for Voyager Academy this past season and was a key piece to the squad, teamed up with Chance Greene (Lynchburg College) and Jay Huff (UVA) they would go on to win the 1A State Championship. Throughout the season China played his role well but many people including myself didn’t know exactly how talented this young man was until after the season. China received an invite to the Basketball Elite East Region Fab 40 camp in March of 2016, during this camp he showed that he was more than just a rebounder and inside presence but that he could play on the wing as well. Following an outstanding performance at camp he received interest from: Chowan University, Lincoln Memorial, WSSU and numerous other programs. However things didn’t fall into place in that short period of time so he decided to go ahead do a Prep year at Bull City Prep in Durham.
What makes him special?
Versatility is the word that comes to mind when I watched china play during the Fab 40 Camp, he knocked down shots from outside, finished plays inside and protected the paint as well. During camp play you normally see lots of guys standing around, playing isolation type ball, but China moved very well without the ball and shot an outstanding percentage from the field throughout. They key for him will be to continue to bulk up, he is pretty lean at this point and we know the college athletes at the forward spot are pretty muscular. Continuing to perfect his ball handling skills will also be a positive for him as well and will allow him to be a more dangerous player from the wing position in college. There is no doubt in my mind that China will have a solid selection of Division 2 schools back on him throughout this school year.
