Winning state championships have become the norm at Winston-Salem Prep. Winners of the 2008 and the three-peat from 2012-2014 NCHSAA 1-A state championships. Notable Phoenix alumni on those teams include University of Miami big man Reggie Johnson, Charleston Southern players Coye Simmons and Mike Hughes, Wake Forest junior Greg McClinton (Named first team all-state by the Associated Press) and former Stetson University point guard Raekwon Harney.
Winston-Salem Preparatory Academy will be entering this season with the expectations of competing at a high level and trying to end their journey once again in Chapel Hill, this time on the winning side after coming up short the two previous years!
This years roster will have another good mixture of class and talent, seniors Zaire Williams (6’7/F) will be expected to be the presence that we know he’s capable of being, game in and game out. He holds offers from Georgia Southern, Marshall and VMI amongst others.
Other seniors that will contribute will be Josh Gould (6’2/G), Levon McCullom (6’4/F),and Justin Carter (6’4/F) each battle tested and bringing great experience along with talent we expect to utilize.
The backcourt has been and will continue to be a force to be dealt with with the return of juniors Justice Goodloe (6’1/PG/offers from Georgia Southern, UMES, Gardner Webb) and Daivien Williamson (6’1/G/offers from Georgia Southern, Hampton, UNCG) with another year under their belt on the varsity level we think these two will have solid years and come into their own and their game will ascend to higher levels. With help from sophomore Chaz Gwyn (6’2/G) they plan to utilize all that they do for one common goal. A State championship!
