Head Coach: Guy Shavers
Conference: Piedmont Triad 4-A
Last Season: 27-3 (9-1 in conference) Advanced to 4th round of NCHSAA 4-A state playoffs losing to eventual state champ Charlotte Catholic.
Head Coach Guy Shavers, had this to say about the upcoming season, “I believe that this has the potential to be the best team that I have coached since I have been at Southwest Guilford High School. We have been pretty good over the past 6 years, going 133-33 over that time, while averaging nearly 80 points per game during that time. With that being said, this group is special.”
“I am not sure if we will be better or worse than the 27-3 record that we posted, including a 4th round exit from the state playoffs by 3 points to Charlotte Catholic, the eventual champions. That game was hard to swallow after realizing that we were 23-39 from the free throw line. I mean, if you go 23 of 39, you should throw for 472 yards and 5 touchdowns right?”
Southwest Guilford High School has 8 players returning from that squad after losing 4 seniors to graduation, including Piedmont Triad 4A All Conference selections in Kaymon Mitchell and sharpshooter Orlando Smith. However, no one will cry for the Cowboys as they return 3 of the best guards in the state in brothers Kameron, Kobe and Keyshawn Langley. All three guards are drawing D-1 attention.
Kameron Langley, ranked #26 in PrepHoopsNC 2017 rankings has offers from the likes of NCA&T, Marshall and the University of Denver. He does a little bit of everything for Southwest and somebody is going to get a gift that they did not expect at the college level. Over the past 2 years “Killa Kam” has let the state in assists, steals and charges taken at the 4A level according to Max Preps. He is a true stat stuffer and an even better person, while sporting a g.p.a. nearing 4.5.
Keyshawn and Kobe LangleyKobe Langley, ranked #6 in PrepHoopsNC 2019 rankings is super athletic and shoots it with the best of them while averaging 13.5 ppg as a freshman, while earning All Conference honors. Kobe can finish from deep or at the rim. His ability to steal the ball is uncanny and his instincts are wise beyond his years. He has had contact from schools such Arizona, NC State, Tennessee and a current offer from Virginia Tech.
PrepHoopsNC’s #9 2019 recruit, Keyshawn Langley is super savvy, with an unexpected jumpshot. This pitbull can run your offense and defense, the ability to score. He does not shake under pressure and constantly pushes the ball with uncanny control of the ball. Key was also All Conference and has a love for the game, but possesses an edge that you need to survive at the highest level. He has the same looks as his twin brother Kobe and averaged that same 13.5 ppg as a freshman last year.
Both twins shot the ball from 3-point distance above 50% last year and are fierce competitors. “The Twins” don’t mind going to the next level together, but are not necessarily a package according to their father, Keyford, who doubles as the their travel coach for CP3 during the travel season. These two stepped on campus boasting 3 straight AAU National Championships and added a “Vegas” Tournament championship this past summer. That edge is needed as they expect to make a run at a high school state championship this year.
New comer Brandon Lamberth, brings much needed size that is truly needed if we are going to make a run. 6’5 Brandon, who comes to Southwest after earning Metro 4A All Conference honors, runs the court like a deer and rebounds like a grown man. He can guard multiple positions and can really shoot the ball, although he does not shoot much from distance.
Hopefully team depth, which was an issue last year, has been addressed as there are 8 returners on this team, of which 7 of them were newcomers last year. Overall, it is pretty much state championship or bust this year. Expectations are high and the kids have really worked hard this off season. The guys really get along well and enjoy each others company. If you see one of them, you see at least eight of them.
Games of interest include:
- An early meeting with Greensboro Day School in Winston Salem on November 26th in the 6th Annual Bobby Martin Classic at WS Reynolds H.S.
- A December meeting with traditionally strong Rusty LaRue and West Forsyth HS
- The Sheetz Invitational Christmas Tournament, with a potential meeting versus highly rated HP Wesleyan.
- January 7, 2017 versus Trinity Christian of Fayetteville, NC in the WS Prep Invitational, which will also feature another game that has WS Prep squaring off with York Prep out of SC.
- MLK event at Southern Alamance HS in Burlington, NC.
- Our annual mammoth encounters with conference foe Northwest Guilford, which of course usually has conference and state implications. “Trust me when I tell you that this year will be no difference,” Shavers said.
