Conference: NCISAA Southern Piedmont Conference
Last Season: 23-8 (Did not participate in NCISSA playoffs)
Former Charlotte star and NBA player Byron Dinkins left Northside Christian Academy as the head coach this spring to take the same position at Carmel Christian, also in Charlotte. Dinkins was the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year after averaging 21.4 points per game his junior year at Charlotte. He played for the Houston Rockets, San Antonio Spurs and Indiana Pacers in the NBA before a prosperous career overseas. Dinkins helped lead Northside Christian to a 165-20 record in six season at the helm. He led Northside Christian to three NCISAA state championships and advanced to the finals six years in a row.
At Carmel Christian, Dinkins takes over for Josh Coley who spent two years at the school amassing a 38-17 overall record. “We’ll be a young team in class and game experience. Every practice and game will be a chance to improve. It will be a total team effort on both ends,” Dinkins stated.
Carmel Christian will feature 2019 prospect Myles Pierre who is ranked #12 in PrepHoopsNC rankings. Pierre is a 6-foot-2 guard that averaged 15.5 points per game last season as a freshman. He played AAU for the CP3 All-Stars when he picked up a offer from Winthrop. 6-foot-8 senior Jon Bryan. Bryan is a strong bodied big man and is athletic for his size. He gets a lot of rebounds and can be an intimidating presence on the post. He averaged six points and nearly five rebounds per game last season.
Another played to watch for Carmel Christian is 2019 wing/guard Donovan Gregory. The 6-foot-5 Gregory is a defensive minded stopper. He will guard the opposing teams best player and has the potential to shut them down. He is quick and strong, and can score the basketball. He also has a offer from Winthrop that he picked up this summer playing with Team United. Head Coach Byron Dinkins had this to say, “New comers Donovan Gregory, Marten Maide and Shawn Morrison will contribute a lot and returning players Zach Prevette and Greg McDonald will see their roles increase this year.”
Carmel Christian will in the Hoopsgiving field in Atlanta the day after Thanksgiving and the Hoodies at Christmas in Charlotte at Providence Day as well as a challenging non conference schedule.
