With Lavar Batts already committed to VCU, JJ Smith now steps in as the highest ranked available prospect in the state of North Carolina. After leaving EE Smith following his sophomore season, he would go on to be a part of a strong team at Pebblebrook that would put together a very impressive season, then he would play on the EBYL and Adidas circuits during the summer. Throughout the summer, he had quite a few games where he showed some flashes of the old JJ we remember from his freshman and sophomore season. The natural talent, mixed with athleticism and a strong frame that makes him look as if he is already going to step on to a college campus.
Just this past week we stopped in to an open gym at FTCC to see JJ compete with some other talented youngsters in the area and he simply was dominant, he scored the ball with ease and came up with some high flying dunks to make the whole gym go crazy. With the youth of EE Smith roster, JJ will definitely be a player that can help the team not only win games but also in the development of the young talent. Guys like wing Arshon King and 6’5 2018 wing could truly blow up this season as he will be playing along JJ and other talented member of the team. As far as recruitment goes at this point he tells us that he has been hearing from: Florida, Florida State, UNLV, Georgia Tech and numerous others. Only time will tell which school will be able to land his services but one thing is for certain, he has continued to grow, mature and work hard. If he keeps that same mentality up over the next few years, there is no doubt in my mind that he can be a pro.
