“I’m still trying to get better, like the offers are going to come and stuff like that. Just trying to work on my game, because I got love for it,” Golphin said.
“Working out every day. Being in the gym. Hitting the weight room hard. Trying to run two miles a day. And with my brothers a lot, just being in the gym a lot — having fun, bonding together.”
The senior currently does not have an offer, but he rattled off some programs that have shown interest: Cleveland State, Kent State, Akron, Cincinnati State Tech, Heidelberg, Buffalo (NY) and West Virginia State.
“Just looking for my academics, to be honest. I got a love for the game of basketball but I’m also a very smart kid … My books are more important to me,” Golhpin said, who seems pretty set on majoring in Sports Medicine. He had a 3.5 GPA last year.
Golphin, 99th player in Prep Hoop Ohio’s 2017 player ranking, is electric offensively. As a junior, he averaged just over 7 points per game. Considering the graduation of Tervell Beck (who is attending a prep school in Oklahoma), there is a sizable scoring gap to be filled. The senior guard will certainly be asked to carry some of that load, but he also spoke very highly of the rest of the Central Catholic roster.
“We’re going to win the conference title, without a doubt we’re going to win that … The team is looking awesome, man. We got a 6’7” kid named Miryne Thomas, real aggressive. We got me, Delshawn Jackson, Alex Heath, Dion [Ivory], Armon [Lillard],” Golphin said.
What skills does Golphin, himself, bring to a team?
“I hustle. I play defense. And I can score at will. Whenever my team needs a bucket, the coach puts it in my hand to go get it.”
Where is the combo guard scoring those buckets from?
“I go inside a lot, that’s my specialty,” Golphin responded.
The combo guard, who played with Ohio Basketball Club this summer, has been working to sure up a few weaknesses.
“My stamina, need to stay in the game longer. I go to the beach sometimes, just work in the sand on my defense,” Golphin said.
Given his work ethic, ball skills, and quickness, the Jamal Crawford-type guard is poised to fill up box scores this season in the North Coast Conference. College scouts should have opportunity to see him in the role of distributor and scorer for the Ironmen this winter.
