After a very nice junior season, he spent his 17U season playing with Waterloo-based program Team BAM, but says he has not seen any recruitment — not even a letter — come his way.
“That hasn’t started for me yet, nothing,” said the senior guard.
Nickelson speculated as to why his recruitment has been slow.
“Because Waterloo East hasn’t had a really good basketball season in I don’t know how long, so colleges really don’t come around to look,” he said.
“I hope I start getting some letters, so I can go play basketball. I’m open to just go anywhere really.”
Nickelson describes his style of play as a playmaker who excels at getting to the rim.
“The coach that I play for now has me playing a variety of positions. My best strength is taking it to the hole, driving and getting layups,” said Nickelson. “My vision and passing is what I’m best at, but I can definitely work more on my handles.”
After averaging 9.4 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.4 assists last season as a junior, Nickelson is eager to showcase himself even more this season.
“My coach expects me to do more, but also expects me to do a lot of the same things I’ve been doing, like be the playmaker on the court, help others out that need help, be kind to others, and just play my game,” said Nickelson, who noted one personal goal he has for his senior season.
“I’m trying to be all-state, that’s a goal of mine.”
