In this day and age of athletic players, it is rare to see a player that may not possess the athletic ability of others his age but is just as productive and has a high ceiling potential wise. However that is exactly what we have in Harrison Mclawhorn, he’s a young big who still has some room to grow but potential wise he is one to keep an eye on. The first time that I had the privilege of watching him play was during the Farmville Central MLK day tournament against Riverside HS. For those of you who didn’t see Riverside play last, they were a very athletic team with Ben Cox and Markel Freeman playing inside and Jadakis Bonds on the wing. So it was impressive to see Harrison got up against them and come up with a double/double of 11 points and 10 rebounds despite not being what you would call a ‘‘ stellar’’ athlete.
What makes him special?
What impressed me the most about Harrison is his IQ for the game, he understands angles very well and does an excellent job of positioning himself for rebounds. Many times young athletes rely solely on athleticism to get rebounds which normally causes them to get in foul trouble, however Harrison does a good job of using his IQ instead. Although he will need to trim down and tone up some, he doesn’t have a bad body at all, he understands how to use his frame to battle inside and his foot speed isn’t bad for a guy his size but could be better. The idea that Harrison is already productive and has so much that he can still add to his game and improve on is really impressive and intriguing, if he cuts some weight, add some athleticism and speed he will be very scary. Playing under Coach Wells Gullage and with Garner Road in the summer, we already know that he is very coachable young man and he will be a player that schools should keep an eye on over the next few years.
