One player that stood out almost immediately was senior shooting guard Matt Halvorsen. Standing 6-foot-1, Halvorsen is a deadly shooter (during the hour long scrimmage session, he was 11-13 from the three point-line) with good ball handling skills and a high basketball IQ.
Matt HalvorsenHalvorsen is originally from Kingsport, Tennessee and played for two years at Dobyns-Bennett High school then transferred to Christ School his sophomore year. He re-classed to the 2017 class after the move. ” Christ School has been an amazing situation for me both on and off the court,” Halvorsen stated. He set the school record for most three-pointers in a season last year with 111, breaking the school record by 11. He averaged 16.1 points and 4 assists per game while helping Christ School advance to the 2nd round of the NCISAA playoffs and a 23-9 overall record.
The sharpshooter has offers from Brown University and a Division Two offer from Lees-McRae. “Lees-McRae has been pushing pretty hard lately. Furman, Campbell and VMI will be coming to watch me play this fall. Then some other schools will be coming through to watch our team play ,” he stated about his current recruitment.
Halvorsen has one of the most fluid three-point shots that I have seen since I began covering high school basketball over seven years ago. Halvorsen had this to say about who helped him develop his shot, ” My older brother Todd, who played at East Tennessee State University. He’s been my trainer for many years and my go to guy when it comes to basketball. He’s the one who’s pushed me and taught me the mechanics.”
With a big senior on a team that has welcomed heralded transfer Damon Harge Jr., at point guard and Australian native Giir Ring at the wing spot, Christ School should be poised to make a deep run into the NCISAA 3-A playoffs. Halvorsen had this to say about the upcoming season, “Well I’m hoping we can make a push for a State championship. That has always been a goal of mine since I got here. With the talent we have we are very capable of it. I hope to break the career 3 point record at Christ School after breaking the single season record last year.”
Christ School and Halvorsen will again play a national schedule, “The Oak Hill game at home will be a lot of fun. Then playing the 3A teams in the state like Greensboro Day, Providence Day, and Wesleyan will also be fun because that’s what will help out push within the State .”
