Wesleyan Christian Academy in High Point, NC is known for producing elite basketball players. Over the past few years, names such as Harry Giles (Duke University), Theo Pinson (University of North Carolina), JaQuel Richmond (UNC-Wilmington), Donovan Gilmore (College of Charleston and UNC-Asheville), Trey Chapman (Virginia Military Institute), Kwe Parker (University of Tennessee), Jalen Johnson (Tennessee) and Montay Brandon (Florida State) have all laced their shoes up at Wesleyan Christian Academy. Coached by former Maryland player Keith Gatlin, Wesleyan Christian Academy is a state powerhouse for basketball. 2019 guard Drew Greene is the next point guard at WCA and PrepHoopsNC had a chance to catch up with the future floor-leader who also boasts a 4.5 Grade Point Average.
PrepHoopsNC: How is the preseason going at Wesleyan so far?
Drew Greene: It is going good. The team has been in the gym early every morning getting up shots. We have a lot of new faces so we are all trying learn how to play together. Our returning players David Caraher, Brendan Austin and Ian Steere are going to give us experience with our new talent which should make us a strong team. We have been having skill work and pickup games in the afternoons every day as well.
PrepHoopsNC: What schools have reached out recently and who has offered?
Drew Greene: Drexel, Mt. Saint Mary’s, UNC-Greensboro, High Point and William and Mary. I have no offers currently. I am not going to worry about getting an offer I’m just going to keep working hard to get better.
PrepHoopsNC: What’s it like playing for former Maryland standout Keith Gatlin?
Drew Greene: I love Coach Gatlin. Coach Gatlin is great. He pushes us to be better and his knowledge of the game is outstanding. We play the same position even though we don’t have the same body type, I still can learn many thing about being a great point guard from him.
PrepHoopsNC: Wesleyan has produced some great players over the years.. what are those expectations like?
Drew Greene: As a point guard I would like to replicate the success of prior guards that Wesleyan has had like Brandon Childress and JaQuel Richmond. I am trying to live up to all of the top Wesleyan stars now and before me. This is a great school and so many college players have come from Wesleyan Christian over the years.
PrepHoopsNC: What is the most important part of your game?
Drew Greene: I need to be the facilitator and get my teammates in a position to score. I also see myself as a strong defender for this team at the guard position. I want to be known as the teammate that does a little bit of everything to help us win. I am all in for this team. I am looking forward to a great season with my team, it should be fun.
