Team Preview: Northside High School (Jacksonville)
Head Coach: Tony Marshburn
Conference: East Central 2-A Conference
Last Season: 23-4 overall (10-0 in East Central 2-A) Advanced to 3rd round of NCHSAA playoffs.
Northside High School went to UNC-Wilmington team camp and finished undefeated against some very good teams from Wilmington and Raleigh and some out of state schools. They played in the East Coast Invitational and played extremely well and lost to the event champion North Mecklenburg High School in the semifinal round, their only loss in the event.
The Monarchs will have average size but will be very athletic at all positions. We have a few seniors and a lot of promising juniors.
Top players returning:
2017 Zach Hobbs, a 6’1 combo guard who
Zach Hobbs
averaged 20.2 points per game last season and is the two time conference and area POY. “Zach, a tremendous kid and a straight “A” student is just an incredible athlete, he handles the ball well, can shoot the 3 ball but is not a pure shooter, and can make plays above the rim. He is the best on the ball defender I have coached in a long, long time”, said head coach Tony Marshburn.
2018 Kenny Dye, a 6’0 PG had a great summer as his overall game has really developed. Both players had a great summer and both should play on the next level. Recruiting has been slow for both players even though Kenny drew praise from Coach Roy Williams and Coach Kevin Keatts at their summer camps.
Demetrius Jones, a 6’3 wing and Gabe Kirkendoll, a very athletic 6’1 guard also had a very good summer as their game continues to develope as well.
Northside High School should contend for the conference title again this year, they have won 23 consecutive conference games, but East Duplin High School and Southwest Onslow High School will also be contenders as well. The Monarchs will play a brutal non-conference schedule again this year. We open our season at rival Jacksonville High School, then play New Hanover High School at home, they will then travel to Asheville to play Jamestown Ragsdale HS in the Coaches vs Cancer event at Kimmel arena on the UNC-Asheville campus over Thanksgiving weekend. Northside High School plays at Clinton HS, at East Carteret HS, and at Jones Senior HS, part of a tough non-conference schedule. They play in the Onslow County Christmas tournament, a local event,
on Dec. 28, 29, & 30.
