Team Preview: Northwest Guilford High School (Greensboro, NC)
Conference: Piedmont Triad 4-A
Head Coach: Lee Reavis (7th year at Northwest Guilford)
Last Season: 23-4 (9-1 in conference) reached the 3rd round of the NCHSAA 4-A state playoffs.
The Northwest Viking Basketball program will be combining a healthy mix of veterans and newcomers for the 2016-2017 campaign.
With the graduation of two-time PT4A All-Conference and NCCA ALL-DISTRICT scoring guard Jaylen Gore (Guilford College), the Vikings will look to veterans Jalen Spicer (Sr.), Reggie Davis (Sr.), David Funderburg (SR.), Matt Rakes (SR.) and Tre’ Turner (JR.) to fill the scoring and leadership roles this season.
Jalen Spicer
With Spicer, Rakes, Turner, and Thomas Hennigan (SR.) handling the ball and applying the defensive pressure for the Vikings this season, Reggie Davis and freshman Christian Hampton have been added into the guard mix on the wing this season. Funderburg, along with Jacob Davis (SR.) will provide some scoring and rebounding out of the post. Tre’ Turner, Matt Rakes, and Thomas Smith (JR.) will provide outside shooting to the Vikings’ squad this season.
Jalen Spicer has a knack for passing, he averaged nearly 9 assists per game last season to go along with 12 points per game. The 5-foot-11 point guard is a pass-first floor general. Built with a passion for setting his teammates up before himself but has the ability to score on his own. He has picked up offers from UNC-Greensboro, North Carolina A&T, Hampton and Florida International. VCU, WCU, Appalachian State, and Murray State have expressed interest.
Tre’ Turner is ranked as the number 7 prospect by Prep Hoops North Carolina in the 2018 rankings and is ranked as the 7th best football prospect in 2018 by 247 Sports. He plays travel basketball with Team CP3 16’s. Turner is a shooter, can knock it down consistently anywhere on the floor. He already has a college-ready frame to go along with length and athleticism, has a knack for rebounding, can score off the dribble or hit the pull-up jumper.
6-foot-4 senior Reggie Davis has a solid, athletic frame, tough defender and re-bounder that runs the floor very well. Offensively he can finish above the rim and now can knock down his jumper.
6-foot-7 forward David Funderburg has an athletic presence inside that can defend the rim on the defensive end. Big body with good hands and can finish with either hand in the post. Solid mid-range shooter and very high basketball IQ.
Matt Rakes is a 5-foot-10 shooting/point guard with a high basketball IQ. Very smart PG that can control the game, while he can knock down shots when needed and is a solid defender.
As expected, Northwest Guilford will be in the mix for the Piedmont-Triad 4A Conference Championship again and will be contender in the NCHSAA 4-A Playoffs.
Thomas Hennigan is a Appalachian State football recruit, at 6-foot-3 Hennigan is a smart player, handles the basketball well and makes good decisions with the ball. High basketball IQ. Strong going to the basket and is a lock down defender.
