Vantage Hoops was in the gym to catch the action throughout the week. Below, we run down a scouting report of a few standouts from the class of 2017.
SG Jared Ridder | MOKAN Elite
At about 6-foot-6, Jared Ridder possesses prototypical size for a wing at the division one level. What makes Ridder a lethal matchup problem is his lights out shooting ability from three point range. He doesn’t need much room to get his shot off, and when he does, defenders better hope they get a hand up in time.
PG Daron Russell | Team Final
The electric play of dynamo point guard Daron Russell was one of the main engines behind Team Final’s strong run of play at The Ei8ht. The “mighty mouse” type floor general is an excellent three point shooter who can pull up on a dime and make opponents pay off the bounce as well as from the catch. Russell is a good paint getter who always looks to get others involved.
SF Jalen Seegars | Team CP3
Jalen Seegars provided a bit of everything for Team CP3 during their title run at The Ei8ht. Seegars was rock solid defensively, and often looked to get out in the open court. He consistently played above the rim, and finished with power on the break.
PG Denmark Slay | District Basketball Club
Once again proving he can go toe-to-toe with just about any point guard he matches up with, Denmark Slay was a major factor for DBC in their sweet 16 run at the Adidas Summer Championships. Slay’s big time playmaking ability along with his leadership, fearless play, and consistently solid defense helped pave the way for his team’s success.
F Charles Snowden | District Basketball Club
Toughness, leadership, and consistent defense is something that one can typically expect from the uber athletic forward Charles Snowden. Snowden guarded multiple positions for The District while making his presence felt on the glass. Snowden often attempted to take down the rim whenever he dunked the ball.
PG Jalen Spicer | Team CP3
Jalen Spicer played with purpose and tenacity at the lead guard spot on both ends of the floor during Team CP3’s title run at The Ei8ht. Whenever ‘Spice’ found himself in the lane, good things usually happened for the floor general and his teammates. Defense was another big part of Spicers game, as he made it a point to pick up full court in an attempt to lock down his opponents.
SG Bryan Trimble | MOKAN Elite
Do-it-all wing Bryan Trimble demonstrated a great work rate to go along with a terrific feel two-way feel for the game. The Florida State commit shot the three ball, got into the lane, kicked to open teammates, rebounded, and defended at a high level on the perimeter.
F Antwan Walker | Team Loaded VA
There isn’t much that Antwan Walker doesn’t bring to the table as a stretch four. Walker is a workhorse on the boards, where he was able to constantly corral a loose ball out of a crowd. Offensively, Walker is best in when setting picks, but also has a nice post up element to his game as well.
SG Lonnie Walker | Team Final
Lonnie Walker proved all week why he’s a top recruiting target among the blue bloods. The strong, skilled, and athletic 6-foot-5 off guard is very comfortable making plays with the ball in his hands. Walker’s motor is relentless, and he is a good rebounder from his position.
PG Jelani Williams | Team Takeover
At 6-foot-5, there aren’t many players in the DMV area with the basketball IQ, athleticism, and versatility that Jelani Williams brings to the table. You have to love the way Williams rebounds the ball for a guard. He works extremely hard on the glass, and has the ability to take it coast-to-coast and consistently make plays for others as well as himself.
