We have to go back to Malik’s 7th grade school year to remember the first time we saw him play, it was in the Cumberland County Middle School championship game against JJ Smith who is now a senior at Northwood Temple Academy. Initially we went to see JJ play but as the game went on you could see the talent level of Malik Johnson and the confidence that he played with, he was one of the younger players on the court but did not back down from anyone, which is something that we still see from Malik this very day.
What makes him special?
First and foremost is his quickness and athletic ability, he’s the type of guard that can get the ball up the court in such a hurry that he can create a one man fast break. Athletically he has the ability to finish above the rim offensively but where he shows this ability the most is on the defensive end of the floor. Personally I can’t count how many times I’ve watched Malik jump into a passing lane for a steal or block a shot off the backboard coming from the weak side. Although at times he may reach for steals a tad bit too much he definitely is a very good defender and we have seen him make things very difficult for some of the top scorers in the state. Also he’s a very gifted passer and knows how to get the ball to teammates without having much operating room without turning the ball over too much. The main question mark has always been his jump shot, he’s had an unorthodox shooting form for some while now but has cleaned up his mechanics a bit and is knowing it down with more efficiency. At this point he doesn’t have any scholarship offers but we know for a fact that will change in due time, he’s definitely a High Major type Point Guard and if he stays focused he can be a very special player.
