Vollbrecht was a key rebounding and inside scorer for the Comets from April to the end of July.
“The top experiences this summer would have to playing basketball with a great group of guys first off,” Vollbrecht said. “There was never a dull moment on or off the court, we won a lot of games but the Vegas run was a lot of fun along with beating some of the best teams out of Wisconsin.
“Coming from a small school playing against much more physical competition really bettered me and will help my game a lot during the winter.”
Jimmy is coming off a junior season of scoring 25.3 points per game and two weekends back at the Breakdown State Tournament Vollbrecht had some huge games hitting multiple threes a game against other top Class AA teams and he was unstoppable in the post once he got to his pivot.
We at NHR have high expectations for the Hubmen this year. Jimmy has the ability to get 30 a game this year, Eric Tiedman is set for a great junior year, and the guard group of Jason Way, Austin Bendzick, and Cody Anton is solid.
“We had a good summer which helped give everyone confidence going into the season,” Jimmy said. “Almost everyone on our team is in football so we do morning lifts then we do skill work and shoot around whenever we get time weather it’s on the weekend or at nights.
“This year we almost return our whole rotation so we have a good amount of experience and talent. Everyone is hopping on board as we could do something special this season so personally just leading them in the right direction and keeping our confidence high is what Coach Urbanek looks for me to do this year.”
Vollbrecht is also looking at what’s going to happen for college basketball. He’s receiving college scholarship offers (most recently from Valley City State) and has a lot of interest.
“At this point a lot of NAIA schools such as Briar Cliff, Valley City State, and Jamestown are showing the most interest,” said Vollbrecht. “Lake region State talks to me often too. Then MIAC schools like St. John’s and St. Thomas. NSIC would be schools like University of Sioux Falls and University of Mary.
“I’m looking forward to the Comets Expo and the opportunities it can bring,” Vollbrecht said.
“I won’t go on any visits most likely until after football now that the season is starting up,” Jimmy said. “I want to visit Briar Cliff, Lake Region State, U of St. Thomas, St. John’s, and then some NSIC schools that I haven’t visited yet.”
