Everyone knows just how tough it is to please your coach. There is a certain pressure that comes from trying to live up to the expectations that a coach puts forth. For most players, that pressure only exists for the three to four hours a day before practice ends and you are able to go home and watch some TV on your own. However, for Eli Mouton, he isn’t afforded that same luxury. For him, the head of his team is the same as the head of his household, playing for his dad, Coach Eric Mouton, at Ascension Episcopal.
Often times, when a player plays for his dad, there is a certain tightness that he plays with, trying his best not to disappoint his father on the sideline. That is what makes Eli’s penchant for flair and flashy plays so unique. When asked what it’s like to play for his dad, he exclaimed, “It’s not easy! He is definitely harder on me than anyone else but I also realize he is only trying to make me a better player. He played college basketball so he knows what it takes to be able to play at the next level.”
Eli is unafraid of making a behind the back pass out of the pick and roll, or pulling up from deep in transition. He uses his quickness and ball handling skills to routinely get into the paint, and finishes at a high rate than you would expect someone who generously lists themselves at 5’8” and 125 pounds. If the help side does rotate over, Eli has a variety of counters. He has the ability to euro around defenders, kicking out to shooters in the corner, or simply lobbing in up and allowing 2017 F Ronald LeBlanc to throw it down with ferocity. That connection led to one of the filthiest plays I saw last year in a video linked below.
Over this past summer, Eli played with Louisiana Select Team Milsap, and he was very grateful for the opportunity. “When Coach Theus with Louisiana Select Team Millsap asked me to play with them I jumped on the opportunity. I wanted to play with some of the best players in the state and play against some of the best competition in the country and I got that chance. I feel like I held my own. I was the starting point guard for our team and we went 24-6 with two tournament championships.” This summer Eli was able to prove that when put on a team with capable talent, he is still able to stand-out, and isn’t just a product of being the best player on a small school team.
Although Eli has yet to receive any offers, it is still early in the recruiting cycle for 2018, especially for an undersized point guard. Nonetheless, he has still heard multiple schools, including NC State, Northwestern State, and Millsaps, as well as being invited to several elite camps in the region. He says that because his dad has been through the process, playing at UL Lafayette, he has been helping Eli along the way. Eli has a 3.14 GPA and scored a 21 on the ACT as a sophomore.
