The schools to recently offer the 6-foot-8 active four man are Bemidji State, U of Mary, and St. Cloud State plus more are interested.
In fact, Derek was so good in Las Vegas leading the Comets in scoring a couple times in The NY2LA Final Chapter, some division one schools saw him play and have expressed interest (UMBC, Navy, and Army).
Thompson talked to Tom Elliott of the St. Cloud Times about winning the Final Chapter and how big of a moment it was for the Comets and himself.
“It was awesome because we haven’t won one all year,” Thompson told the SC Times. “We kept losing in the semifinals all the time. For it to be our last one and to win was really nice.”
The event was memorable too as the Comets had a huge win in a classic against the Warriors, they beat a top three Wisconsin team in the Wisconsin Swing (they beat the top Wisconsin team Wisconsin Playground Elite in running time earlier in the year), and the Comets beat Nike sponsored EYBL team Las Vegas Prospects in the final.
Comets Coach Chris Lewis talked about how big Thompson was for the Comets in July and put it in this way:
“Derek has played really, really well the last six weeks of the season. From the beginning of the year, we were talking about our big three being Bryce Irsfeld, Simon Wright, Gavin Baumgartner. By the end of the year, it was the big four with Derek.
“As the season wore on, (Derek’s) confidence grew. He’s a great teammate and a fantastic kid to coach. I’m excited to see where he ends up.”
“It was a fun time,” Thompson said to the St. Cloud Times. “It was really hot there, too hot to really do anything. We played eight games in four days and it went really well.”
Now Thompson is focused on his recruitment as well as football season where he is also a standout football player.
