The Linn-Mar 2019 was routinely turning heads — ours at PHIA and others’ — this spring and summer while playing with the Iowa Barnstormers’ ultra-successful 15U squad.
“I started out as more of a role player, I was in there to be a tough defender and to set a lot of screens and rebound. But I was also allowed to take my own shots and get to the rim whenever I needed to. And it was incredible how we played, especially in Las Vegas and South Carolina, we really came together and those were really great weekends,” said Hutcheson.
The versatile small forward says he feels most comfortable using his good-sized frame to make an impact in the paint, but he’s working to improve an ever-improving — albeit already existing — perimeter game.
“I feel like I’m definitely most comfortable in the paint and driving to the hoop, rebounding and posting up occasionally when I have a smaller guy on me. But I’m also capable of shooting outside shots, like 3s and pull-up jumpers, if it’s there,” he said.
“I definitely need to work on my ball-handling still, I’ve been working on that but it’s still a work in progress. And then strength — I need to get a lot stronger. Also just shooting, off-the-catch and off-the-dribble, that will help widen my game out.”
Last year with Linn-Mar, Hutcheson started his season with the freshman squad, but was moved to the sophomore team after Holiday Break.
“I was pretty much on that team (sophomore) because they told me they were going to put me on varsity this year, and they wanted me to get experience playing with that group of guys,” said Hutcheson. “So when I got moved up I was just trying to prove myself to those guys, and to the coaches, and prove like I belonged there because not many guys get moved up at Linn-Mar.”
This season, though he’ll still be quite young, Hutcheson says his goal is to establish himself as a leader with the Lions’ varsity squad.
“I’d like to contribute as much as I can and help us win,” he said. “And I’d like to be looked to as a leader, even by the upperclassmen. I feel like if I become a leader it will help up in the right direction.”
