The 6-foot-2 2019 was his team’s leader in both statistical categories, but says it’s defense and creating for others that are his best strengths.
“My strengths I would say are getting to the rim and creating for other people, and then shooting the ball sometimes. Also, I can play defense on most anybody, it doesn’t matter their height or position,” said Porter.
“I need to improve on my ball-handling, that definitely needs some work. And then just being a more consistent shooter.”
After impressing with the Tigers last winter, he continued to shine this spring and summer playing with one of the surprise grassroots teams in the state, the ultra-competitive Pump ‘N Run Black 15U.
“We had a pretty good season, and what I did was a little bit of everything; I scored, rebounded, assisted. I think we have a great group of guys and I had pretty much had the same role as I do with New London,” said Porter.
Now he’s gearing up for a sophomore campaign, where he and his Tigers could have a big-time season.
“I’m not really into stats, so I’m more concerned with the team and team success — and getting to state is the main goal. If I score 20 points per game or 5 points per game it doesn’t really matter, as long as I’m playing well helping the team,” said Porter.
“I just think that if I keep playing well the scouts will notice that and I’ll get recruited then. So I’m just going to keep working and playing my game.”
