As one college coach stated to me in the past, ‘‘you can never have enough bigs that can run the floor and finish inside but play outside as well. ‘’ That is exactly what we have in Markel Freeman, a young man who many college coaches may not know about at this point, but all that should change before much longer. Our first opportunity to watch Markel play was at the Farmville Central HS MLK day tournament this past January, as soon as the game started you could see his talent and potential very clearly. His team would go on to finish the game with a win and Markel would earn an East Region Fab 40 Camp invite that day and would play very well at the Fab 40 camp , turning the heads of the multiple media members that were in attendance.
What makes him special?
What makes Markel a special player is his ability to do multiple things very well, he runs the floor nicely for a player his height and has outstanding hands so dropped passes are not an issue for him. He has a nice mixture of athleticism and strength, with a frame that is somewhat lean at this point but he’s far from weak when playing inside. As of now we view him as a Power Forward but he does own some Small Forward skills, he can shoot the midrange ball fairly well and on defense has decent lateral quickness to be able to guard wing players. What has impressed me most about Markel when I have watched him play is his ability to protect the rim defensively. It doesn’t matter if a player is coming in for a dunk or if he’s making a defensive play from the weak side, Markel challenges opponents at a high rate and makes things difficult on that end. His recruitment as of now has been pretty quiet but D2 schools should definitely be on him, if he continues to develop as a wing player, we could see some D1 school recruiting him in the very near future.
