Although there are many people in the game of basketball that love to play offense, there a few players each year that we see, who seem to love to play on the defensive end even more. As we look at some of the past NBA defensive players of the year, there are quite a few big men who won the award, Such as: Marc Gasol and Tyson Chandler, simply because their ability to protect the paint is essential for the success of the time on an every night basis. The player that many of us think about the most when it comes to protecting the paint is Former NBA All-Star Center Dikemebe Mutombo, his game on offense was good but defensively was where he earned his reputation as a big time shot blocker. Well here in Eastern North Carolina, we have a young man who is making his name with media and college coaches and he’s doing that by dominating the defensive end of the floor as well, his name is James Moore.
What makes him special?
James is a solid player on the offensive end of the floor, there is no doubt about that, he has a very long wingspan and solid athleticism to go along with it. He finishes plays well inside and doesn’t try to do things that are outside of his comfort zone, you won’t see him coming down the court trying to make a one on one play but instead playing in the flow of the offense. This is part of the reason why he was able to help his team reach the East regional Championship game this past season, he’s about winning and putting the team before himself. However what really make him special is his shot blocking ability, James averaged 10.6 blocks per game this past season, the stat alone should tell you how special of a defender he is. James does a great job of not leaving his feet before opponents and has a natural gift of timing exactly when the shot is going to go up to get the block. He understands how to use his length and athleticism on that end of the floor very well and does a good job of not picking up fouls. If he’s not blocking shots, he’s altering them at a high rate, this young man is definitely one that you would need to put on your radar if you’re a D1 or high D2 college coach.
