Continue ReadingCharlotte, North Carolina nicknamed “The Queen City” is loaded with basketball talent in the 2018 class. In the new age of big point guards, Jamarius Burton who recently announced he is transferring from Berry Academy to Independence High School, fits that mold perfectly.
Blessed with elite athleticism, the big point guard is a beast in transition that can punish the rim. He averaged 14 points and 8 rebounds this past season at Berry Academy. Burton describes his game as “I am a strong point guard who can get to the rim and make the necessary plays . I am a relentless defender and I compare my game to former Providence College star and NBA player Kris Dunn due to the similar size and style of play.”
The rising junior is ranked 16th by PrepHoopsNC and has offers from LaSalle, VCU, Penn State, Old Dominion, Kent State and Hampton University. ” I have gained interest from Providence College, Middle Tennessee State University, Appalachian State University, East Carolina University, Denver, James Madison University and Longwood.” Burton is on track to be a high-major recruit and had this to say about making a college decision, “When I make my decision, I am goign to assess the coaching staff as well as the school environment and also who else is on the roster.”
On his decision to transfer to Independence High School, Burton stated ” Our ultimate team goal is to win a state title”. At Independence he will join a team that went 21-8 last season and advanced to the third round of the NCHSAA 4-A state tournament. He will team up at Independence with big man Justyn Hamilton, a 6-foot-10 center who is ranked 8th by PrepHoopsNC in the 2017 class. Also at Independence is 5-foot-11 guard Chae Johnson who averaged nearly 8 points per game last season to go along with 5 assists and 6-foot-3, Matthew Statile who averaged 8 points per game.
With the addition of Burton, Independence High should be a favorite to win the Southern Meck 4-A Conference this upcoming season and make a strong push for a state title.
