One of the coolest things about scouting high school basketball players is the different people you meet from different backgrounds and countries. Many players that come from other countries are here to not only play basketball and earn a college scholarship but also to adjust to the way of living in America. One player that has been a privilege to get to know is William Onyeobi, he is the type of young man that every time you see him he has a huge smile on his face. William came to the states more advanced than many players his age and also having a physique that looks as if he spends a good amount of time in the weight room. Off the court he is just an overall great person to be around and will be a great asset to not only the college team that he eventually signs with but also that entire community.
What makes him special?
Strength and athleticism is what you will see from William without a doubt, he plays the game very strong inside regardless of whatever the height of his opponent is. He runs the floor very well and finishes at a solid rate inside and above the rim, add to that a consistent high motor and you have a player that coaches love. On the defensive end he has the strength to play inside against bigs but also the foot speed to step and defend wing players, which makes him a versatile defender that can guard the SG-PF position with no problem. The main area of improvement will need to be knocking down the outside shot with consistency which would make him a legitimate Wing prospect, at this point he’s more of a Stretch Forward or shorter Power Forward. However we all have seen since he’s been here that William is a very hard worker and there is no doubt that he is going to continue to improve, D1 college coaches should be keeping a close eye on him during this next season.
