The versatile, high energy, 6-foot-6 forward has put together a strong body of work this spring and summer. Young caught the attention of several college coaches last week at Hoop Group Elite 1, and is poised to carry the positive momentum he’s built this summer with him into his senior campaign.
Born in Atlanta, but raised in Maryland, Young attends one of the most prestigious academic schools in the area, Sidwell Friends School. While carrying a commendable 3.3 GPA throughout his junior year, Young was one of the top four scorers on his team who posted an 18-10 record. Young’s calling card is his non-stop hustle and defense. Young is the type of player who can put up a double-double without having a single play called for him.
“I’m a lockdown defender. A Complete hustle player,” Young explained. “Always trying to get rebounds. Find my open spot and I can make an open shots.”
Another appealing part of Young’s game is his cohesiveness with his teammates. Young is considered one of the leaders of his team, and does so by more than example.
“I talk to my teammates on the low a lot,” Young stated. “I try to comfort them when they get in their heads.”
As his game continues to evolve, Young’s current areas of focus for improvement are his ball-handling and shooting skills. He understands the value improving each aspect of his game will have in elevating himself to the next level as a player.
“I wanna get at least 3 range which will make it a lot easier for me to drive to the paint so people can’t play back on me,” he said. “And my dribbling so when I get the rebound I can just take it out and start the fast break.”
While he is yet to land a Division One scholarship offer to this point, Young draws college interest from schools across a variety of levels. Division One programs such as James Madison, Yale, and Lafayette have expressed some interest in Young. Perennial Division Two powerhouse Fairmont State is also reported to have interest. Salisbury, Randolph Macon, Rochester, and Marymount are among the primary Division Three programs who are currently recruiting Young.
Young, who will finish out July on the AAU Circuit in Vegas this week and Orlando next week with Maryland’s Finest, should continue to garner interest from additional programs given his ability to impact the game in so many ways.
