The 6-foot-3 Clarion-Goldfield shooting guard is starting to receive a slew of letters, emails and elite camp invites from various programs at all levels
“Augustana (SD) sent me an invite to their camp. I got an invite from Black Hills State to their elite camp. I’ve been talking to Morningside quite a bit about coming down to work out with the coach and players. Also Grand View is looking at me. And I went to a game at Waldorf last season,” said Darland, who mentioned his recruitment is a priority for him as he continues his 16U summer.
“I’d say it’s a priority for me, I just want to get my name out there so (coaches) can see me the next two years – the earlier you get started with all that the better. So that’s definitely one of my priorities is getting my name out there and talking to college coaches. That’s the goal, is to play college ball someday.”
After a successful sophomore campaign with the Cowboys — he averaged 11.5 points and shot 43 percent from deep — he’s working this offseason with Iowa Cornsharks to sharpen several components of his game.
“Just my ball-handling and my distributing ability, also my mid-range and attacking the basket are things I’m working on. I’m working on being stronger and being a little quicker on defense, and just being more versatile,” said Darland who will look to take over more of a leadership role this winter as a junior.
“I’m just trying to improve my leadership abilities. And what I definitely need to do is shoot, hit some 3s and get to the basket. And I play backup point guard too, so I’ll need to distribute the ball, and just get guys open.”
In the meantime he’ll lace up with the ‘Sharks 16U Select squad for two more July live period events.
“I’m just trying to pick up more interest from colleges and hopefully pick up an offer; at least get some coaches close so they can watch me during the high school season more,” said Darland. “And just get my name out there so college coaches can see me.”
