His first offer came from Coach Horner at North Dakota, that was followed by a rare in-state offer from Des Moines’ Drake University.
“I hadn’t really heard from Drake much, I just knew that Hank (Huddleson) told me that they really liked how I played when they saw me. And then Coach Horner was at our first game in Orlando, and I played really well,” said Coburn, who says other in-state D1s are showing interest.
“UNI and Iowa, and those are about the only two that have been on me the hardest. They’ve been in contact with Hank quite a bit.”
At 6-foot-10 with some nice length and increasing strength, Coburn already is becoming a dominant presence in the paint. But he’s not satisfied with just that, and has been working to evolve into a more diverse player.
“I’ve gotten a lot stronger, my jump-shot has gotten better, and I’ve been working on my ball-handling,” said Coburn. “I’m still working on my outside shooting. It’s coming along pretty well, and hopefully by the start of next season I’ll be able to step out and hit a couple 3s.”
He’ll start his sophomore season wearing a new uniform, that of the Spirit Lake Indians. Where he’ll carry the torch from top-2016 and current Iowa Hawkeye Ryan Kreiner.
“I wanted to go to a bigger school and play better competition, and meet new people,” said Coburn. “My role will be to be a leader, there are some seniors that will be there this year, but I think I’ll have to be a leader and take hold of the team.”
Coburn recently wrapped up his 15U offseason with the Martin Brothers, who were all over the country this spring and summer playing in front of a wide-range of scouts and coaches.
“It was great playing in front of all the coaches and meeting people,” said Coburn. “I think I played pretty well, and overall it was a great experience.”
