The 6-foot-7 junior-to-be is a power forward on the hardwood, and plays tight end and defensive end on the gridiron. And though he’s receiving more interest in football right now, he says he’s keeping his options open.
West Virginia, Akron, Kent State and Miami (Ohio) have been recruiting him for basketball. Whereas Michigan State, Michigan, Pittsburgh, Ohio, Miami (Ohio) and Kentucky have reached out for football.
“Right now I don’t really know, I’m still open,” said Upshaw. “Basketball is really my first love, but I really like football, and I think I’ll go to college for that. But I’m just keeping my options open right now.”
After coming off the bench last season as a sophomore with a Spartans team that made the state championship, Upshaw says next season he’ll be starting, and will play a much different role.
“Going into my junior year I expect to be one of the leaders on the team, and to help show the younger guys what to expect at the higher level.”
In the meantime he’ll be playing with Ohio Nova for one last tournament this weekend in Las Vegas, a live period event.
“I just want to go down there and play good,” said Upshaw. “And just work on the stuff that I need to work on and do my best.”
