Anyone who lives In the State of North Carolina and follows high school basketball, definitely knows about Trinity Christian School in Fayetteville NC. For quite a few years Trinity has been known for their appearances in State championship games, as well as having a high amount of talent of their squads. In recent years we have seen star players such as: Dennis Smith Jr, Kwe Parker, Mike Thorne and Zo Tyson just to name a few. So it was no surprise to see the next upcoming big time player from Trinity that began to show us all his potential to be special as an 8th grader playing varsity.
His name is Joey Baker, now going into his sophomore year he has two full years of varsity basketball under his belt and was really counted on by his squad this year to provide more scoring and overall contribution. The previous year he was on a roster with Dennis Smith Jr and Zo Tyson so he was more of a role player that was learning for the most part , However this year he stepped up for his squad and came up big on quite a few occasions. At 6’7 Baker already has nice size for a college level wing, he is an outstanding shooter from deep and midrange while using minimal dribbles. He has good athleticism that he uses on a regular basis by throwing down dunks or getting put back dunks when the shot comes off the rim. Also Joey is a very unselfish teammate, although he has the ability to score he doesn’t only look for his shot but instead makes sure everybody gets involved. Defensively he continues to make strides in the ability to be able to defend Guards and wings, over this past year he seems to be comfortable stepping out and defending quicker opponents but still containing them. The main improvement for this young man is to always stay aggressive no matter that the situation is , When Joey is aggressive he is definitely a difficult player for opponents to guard. When speaking with Joey about what he learned about the whole recruitment process from playing with Dennis Smith Jr, he responded by saying, ‘‘I just kind of sat back and watched. I saw his mentality and how he carried himself, I would ask for some advice on the court every once in a while.’’ Well it look like Dennis Smith Jr. has passed the torch before he left and we can now all just sit back and watch the process of Joey Baker becoming the next star out of Trinity Christian.
