And though he would start on many 4A teams next season as a junior, he’ll take a backseat to two of the state’s best guards next season.
Flitz is fine with that, and even embraces it.
“Playing at Iowa City West is certainly different than playing anywhere else in Iowa at the high school level. It’s difficult sometimes, but it’s also a really good experience to have that depth of guys and skill that you can go up against everyday in practice and get better from,” said the 6-foot point guard.
“This year with (Connor) McCaffery and (Devontae) Lane, I see myself rotating in with those two. And I thought I had a really good June with West, and when Lane and Connor were gone it felt good to fill that void and produce like they would.”
Even without playing a lick of varsity yet, Flitz has seen his recruitment start of late. And it’s high academics that are of importance for the cerebral prospect.
“I’ve had a few interactions with colleges. One of my first was U of Chicago; I talked with one of their assistant coaches and invited to one of their camps that I plan to attend this fall. I was also contacted by Pomona College out in California, and had a visit there and talked with their coach extensively and had a really good meeting there,” said Flitz.
“I elite-camped at Princeton last year and spoke with their coach. And I think I’m going to pursue some more Ivy League camps in the future.”
But it’s not just on the hardwood where Flitz excels, he’s also vying to be the starting quarterback for the Trojans this fall.
“I’m keeping all of my options open right now in football and basketball both,” said Flitz. “They are both sports I love a lot, and sports I can see myself having success in. I think if I keep working hard I’ll have opportunities in both sports.”
A skilled hoopster with the ability to play both guard spots, Flitz explained to PHI his strengths and style of play.
“I see myself as a true sharpshooter, somebody who can knock down almost every open look as well as contested shots. And I also pride myself on defense, both on-the-ball and especially help defense,” said Flitz, who will play in one last 16U grassroots event this weekend with Iowa Dynasty.
“I want to show my ability to create some shots and and knock those down. And also continue getting better at attacking the basket and finishing through bigger defenders.”
