We have to go back a few years to remember my first encounter with Dakari Johnson, which was in a gym on Fort Bragg during the summer where he was going through intense drills with his father. At the time he was only an 8th grader but already had skills that were very well advanced and a work ethic that you don’t see in many kids that age. Fast forward a year and he had just completed his Freshman Year of Varsity basketball starting at the Point Guard spot for a team that would challenge some of the top schools in the state. Dakari would go on to average 16 Points and 6 Assist per game while being named the Basketball Elite Cumberland County Rookie of The Year due to his stellar play throughout the season. The following season he would put up impressive numbers once again helping to lead his team to a Conference Championship and to the NCISAA 1A State Semifinal, where they would eventually come up short. Following the season he has been playing with Garner Road 16u and has put together numerous impressive performances and has been named Tournament MVP at multiple Big Shots events.
What makes him Special?
First off he is a very smart player, he reads defenses well and doesn’t try to do too much unlike many guards his age, he has good passing ability and does not mind feeding the hot man on his team when they have it going. His on the court demeanor is just what you love to see from your Point Guard, he keeps a poker face no matter what is going on and he has become more of a vocal leader for his squad now. Offensively he has a very solid handle and his midrange and perimeter jump shots are on the money, he knows the perfect time to pull up for the jump shot and when to attack the basket for a layup. On defense he stays low and uses his speed and strength to make things difficult for opponents and forces quite a few turnovers. To make it plain and simple, Dakari Johnson is a legit D1 Point Guard prospect and a floor general that can make plays for himself and others, college coaches that are not on board already should be making plans to come see this young man play next season at Village Christian.
