With the loss of multiple seniors and the transfer of Junior Guard Malique Jacobs, the New Hanover High School basketball team will be looking in a different direction for leadership this season. That leadership will most likely be divided up throughout the team but one player in particular that we expect to step into that role and have a big time season is Junior Point Guard Fred Taylor. Fred is an outstanding ball handler and already has a reputation on the East Side of the state for making defenders look silly with one of his crossovers or hesitation moves. During the previous season he played the role of facilitator mostly, making sure that all of his teammates are getting a high amount of touches and scoring opportunities. Well this year he still is getting everyone involved but now Fred is also showing his ability to score the ball , and during the ECI Team Camp he had games where he knocked down multiple treys and finished buckets in the lane with ease. As a Point Guard he already has many of the attributes that are needed for the college level such as : Speed, outstanding ball handling skills, legit passing ability, and stellar defense however adding the ability to put up big time scoring numbers would only make him that much more dangerous of a player. Fred is already the type of player that can give you 10 points and 15 Assists any night but he’s developing into a player that could give you 15 points and 15 Assists on any night! At this point his recruitment has been rather quiet with NC Wesleyan being the only school that is recruiting him so far. However before the season ends we fully expect more schools to be on board, especially schools at the Division 2 level that will want a Guard that can run a squad.
