Perry has a bonafide “Big 3” with 2018 point guard Rashon Ivory and 2017s Kyle Nevitt and Janier Puente. But it’s not just them, there’s a nice supporting cast too — including 6-foot-5 wing Connor Nielson. The Blue Jays — despite 20 points from Bloodhound senior CJ Richardson — controlled this one from start to finish. Expect them to be very good in the Raccoon River Conference next season.
11:00 — Urbandale 57 vs Earlham 23
Earlham is definitely in rebuilding mode after the departure of stud 2016s Canyon Hopkins, AJ Leporte and others. But it’s not without some star-power; Trent Williamson is one of the state’stop 2019s, and will be very good for the next three seasons. Urbandale was able to come away with the 34 point win despite playing without Brayden Washington and star 2019 Grant Garwood. Trevor Miller led the J-Hawks with 14 points.
12:00 — Benton 69 vs Algona 68 (3OT)
Spencer Touro was fantastic when I saw him during the spring while playing with the Iowa Mavericks, and he went from unranked up to 43rd in 2018. After his performance in this one, he may be due for a bump. The 5-foot-10 guard was absolutely magnificent en route to a game-high 36 points. He took control late in regulation — on both ends — and brought his team back from a 14 point second half deficit to force OT. Then he hit the game winner — which he created off the bounce — in triple OT to fully execute the come-from-behind win.
1:00 — North Polk 53 vs Algona 42
The Comets have a pair of very good 2019s with 6-foot-5 center Caleb Lomica and 6-foot guard Colten Parkins. The two combined to score 30 of their teams’ 53 points in the win, and will make basketball fun for the next three seasons at North Polk.
2:00 — Des Moines North 91 vs Benton 63
North stayed undefeated, moving to 6-0 thanks in large part to 2019 phenom Tyreke Locure’s 34 points. It’s been a long month for a lot of the Polar Bears who have been playing AAU ball for the past few weekends, so they will be taking tomorrow off and will head to Adventureland instead. Head coach Chad Ryan told me after the game that it was only the third time this summer that all five of the starters were playing together at the same time, and they gelled well. James Deng added 15 in the win, and Jal Bijiek put in 10.
