Current Rank — 124
This athletic and versatile small forward was showcasing his diverse skill-set all month with the Polar Bears. He’s bouncy, and strong enough to bang in the post at this level, plus he flashed an increasingly sweet stroke from beyond the arc — especially at the Drake Team Camp. He’ll be the X-factor for one of Iowa’s most talented team’s next season.
2017 Austin Ash, 6’2 G (Mount Vernon)
Current Rank — 28
We already held Ash in high regard, as evidenced by his current top-30 ranking, but after his brilliant scoring performances at Drake, he will likely move into the top 25. This kid is as precise a shooter as there is in the state, and he knows how to get himself open. He could be a steal for any NAIA program that may get him. Division II schools may want to take notice too.
2017 Mhiyu Thomas, 6’4 SF (Roosevelt)
Current Rank — 76
Thomas is a well-built and athletic swingman, who is best at banging in the paint and slashing to the hoop, but can hit an open jumper if warranted. He played with North his sophomore season before transferring into Roosevelt last year where he played a small role off the bench. He could blossom into a star next season, and he’ll certainly move into our top-50 when the new rankings are released.
2018 Cade Moritz, 6’7 C (Roosevelt)
Current Rank — 123
Another Roughrider who was utterly impressive last month, Moritz may have had the most eye-opening June in the state. He has transferred in to Roosevelt from Norwalk, and it looks as though Charles Zanders will run his offense through the skilled big-man. Moritz showed himself to be versatile on defense, and scored 20 plus in several games we saw last month.
2018 Seybian Sims, 6’6 PF (Iowa City West)
Current Rank — 36
He was really good in May with Iowa Dynasty, and even better in June while proving to be a major impact player with Iowa City West. It looks like Sims could make his way into the starting lineup with West, and he is legitimately a difference-maker for this team that should be considered one of the favorites, again, to win a 4A title.
2017 Solomon Clayton, 6’4 SF (Fort Dodge)
Current Rank — 79
A fiery and explosive forward, Clayton was dominant at times last month as the lead guy on a Fort Dodge team that will look for him to do a little bit of everything next season. He is fierce in the paint, and explosive off the dribble; also showed an improved ability to hit the deep ball. He’ll be playing with Kingdom Hoops Elite 17U this spring — watch out for this dynamic wing.
2017 Sam Allen, 6’3 SG (Grinnell)
Current Rank — 17
Already a top-20 player in the state, Allen could very well move into the top-15 after his jaw-dropping performances at the Grand View Team Camp. He was the only true scoring threat on his team that weekend, and even with the opponents knowing that, he was able to get off his shot routinely; and he hit most of them. His ability to knock in deep and contested looks is uncanny, and he makes difficult shots look effortless. He might be the best shooter in the state.
2018 Nathan Johnson, 6’6 SF (Waukee)
Current Rank –15
Already a top-15 player in his class, there’s not much room to move up for this bouncy wing. But after showing is diverse skill-set — on both ends of the floor — at the Urbandale Team Camp, he very well could see his ranking improve come August when the next installment is released. He’s got some elite athleticism, and his jumper is coming along nicely. Defensively, he could block a lot of shots this season, and is at the very least disruptive. He could emerge as a star this winter for the Warriors.
