Guards in this class are a plenty and 10 of the top 16 players in the class fall in this category starting with one of the top players in the nation in Javonte Smart (6’4 PG, Scotlandville). Not much else needs to be said. He’s got an all around game and will be able to choose his school from the blue bloods.
Greg Williams (6’3 G, Lafayette Christian) had a big July and is becoming a known commodity on the nation scene after playing with Louisiana Elite 17u against some of the top UAA competition. Williams fills a stat sheet like very few can. Another hard riser is the 5th overall player and 4th guard Tyrece Radford (6’1 PG, McKinley). The lefty lives in the lane and above the rim and has improved his jumper.
Jared Butler (6’2 G, Riverside) was injured all summer and is finally getting healthy. Didn’t get a chance to play hardly at all but his high school coach Timmy Byrd told us after last season he was putting Butler in the same offense Tweety Carter ran at Reserve Christian under Byrd. Excited to see what he does.
The next three guards are all improving with the ball in their hands but are known shooters. Terry Collins Jr. (6’2 G, Bonnabel), Jharon Whitfield (6’0 SG, Madison Prep), and Devion Dunbar (6’1 G, Sicily Island) can all put the ball in the basket at an alarming rate and are transitioning to more of an on ball role as creators as well.
Marquie Mosley (6’0 SG, Ellender) scored around 30 a game this summer in their high paced offense and will be looked upon as a scorer big time next season. The next two guards are great leaders on the court in Brian White (5’10 PG Natchitoches Central) and Jimel London (5’9 PG, East Ascension).
They got a chance to face off in the semifinals last year and very well could do so again. White scores a bit more than London does but London is a coach on the court and asked to do so much more on both ends of the floor.
There are plenty of names to watch like Jonathan Cisse (6’2 PG, St. Thomas More), Farontay Banks (6’0 PG, Comeaux), Eric Reed Jr. (6’1 PG, University), Eli Mouton (5’9 PG, Ascension Episcopal), and Garland Robertson Jr. (5’10 G, Riverside).
