Rankings Qs to Ponder:
Q1. Pulley or D1, who is #1? Pulley has two losses when they were missing Tre, D1 has one loss and it was in overtime by a point. Pulley has played about six games more of high level competition when you run through the schedules and is in the EYBL which is the league that most would agree is tougher. D1 is ranked #2 nationally with Pulley #7. What would Pulley be with Tre healthy? Doesn’t really matter though, have to base these things on results. Right now D1 gets a small edge. Both have a month off before the huge events in South Carolina in July.
Q2. Should Fury Kallman be #3? Without a doubt. They just won state, they have lost four games all year, they beat Warriors, Heat Vang, and Comets Lewis who are all top six teams and they avenged all their Minnesota losses. Anybody that disagrees with them at three should be walked out of the conversation the way Uncle Phil threw Jazzy Jeff out the front door.
Q3. Who is #4? I struggled with where to rank Heat Vang, Comets Lewis, and Warriors for a bit. Heat Vang was second in state but all of them lost to Fury Kallman this weekend, just at different times. The only head to head is Comets beating Heat so I recognized that. Then, where do you go with Warriors vs Comets? They haven’t played yet. I tried to compare records but that didn’t work. Comets are 8-3 vs top 25, Warriors are 8-2 and the only difference is Comets played D1 Minnesota and lost. Other losses are the same. Comets did better against Fury Kallman but the Warriors did better against Fury Zurn than the Comets have. Warriors have won a couple good events, Comets have done great in SPTS and NY2LA leagues. I just said forget it and went with what I had last week and hopefully they will play in the GPA and settle it that way.
Q4. Where do I put Fury Zurn? If anybody wants to talk injury you better discuss Fury Zurn too. No Jordan Horn and losing Myles Hanson, nobody has been dealt the blow of losing their top two guys like the Fury. So where to put them? They haven’t played Heat Vang, they beat Comets Lewis, and they have split with the Warriors although were crushed this weekend. I had them at five because of the Comets win but then they also lost to Powerhouse MN. So do you put them over Comets or below Powerhouse (Heat Vang is between those two)? It was a tough call but I decided to drop them below Powerhouse because the Fury had a tough weekend. It seems like a seriously stiff drop but when going head to head that sometimes happens especially when you beat the team ranked 5th before and lose to the 8th ranked team. The deciding factor was the recent losses to Heat Bui, Powerhouse, and Warriors (by a big margin).
Q5. What else? Where do you put Grassroots as they basically have an entirely new team at 17U with graduating seniors no longer playing, Jaquan now on the Phenom, and the younger guys playing down at younger levels? Tough call. We simply decided that the team they brought this weekend listed as their top team will be the team we rank and it will continue on with the ranking they had as top team before.
Also, one thing to know is that while the Select Ohnstad and SW Stars records may not represent where they are ranked, they have faced much tougher competition in the SPTS and NY2LA levels of play so that has to be considered as well.
