It’s clear that the rangy and athletic wing will play an integral role with Iowa City West next season. He uses his length to help crash the boards as effectively as anyone on his team, and to score well around the rim. He’ll be a rebound and shot-blocking menace the next two seasons for the Trojans.
2017 Dawson Jones, 6’6 F, Johnston
An athletic and skilled forward, Jones is best at using his lean but strong frame to bang in the post, it is certainly capable of stepping out and knocking in a triple. He gets it done on both ends of the floor, and he could find himself as the leader of one of the CIML’s best teams — the Dragons will surprise some people next season.
2018 Blake Brinkmeyer, 6’7 PF, Valley
We had been hearing a lot about this kid coming into the weekend, and just by looking at him you could see what all the fuss was about. He’s got some very long limbs on his already tall frame, and has some plus-bounce to go with it. That alone will make him a rebounding and shot-blocking menace. Once his offensive skill-set continues to improve, he could be dominant.
2018 Carter Frey, 5’10 G, Valley
Frey was the starting point guard all weekend for a Valley team that made a run to the championship game. His shot wasn’t falling this weekend, but it could have just been an off couple of days — we’ve seen him hit jumpers with regularity before. Frey is very quick with a strong upper body and seems to have a knack for being in the right place at the right time — a nose for the rim.
2017 Reese Skinner, 6′ SG, Valley
It was tough for this kid to see the floor last season with the abundance of talent the Tigers had on the roster, but he seems poised to make a major impact this year with the team. He was instrumental in a close loss to Iowa City West in the finals, scoring 10 points, and hitting shots at opportune times when his team needed him most. The senior-to-be is a confident shooter, who does not shy away from the big moment.
2017 Marshawn Yarbrough, 6’1 G, Iowa City West
An extremely fast and athletic wing, Yarbrough is a high-riser who can finish at the rim and out-jump taller bigs for rebounds. It seems he still has a lot to learn about the Trojans’ offensive philosophy, but as long as he can get the minutes his talent warrants, he could be a guard who makes a big impact with rebounds and scoring.
2018 Nathan Nelson, 6’3 G/F, Waukee
The younger brother of former Waukee standout Anthony Nelson, Nathan is a good-sized and big-bodied wing who uses his size well to bang in the post and absorb contact well. He is a perfectly capable outside shooter also, and as a junior with the Warriors will be critical to the team’s success.
2017 Jon Chapman, 6’1 SG, Waukee
Chapman is a spot-up shooter, and he was a darn good one last weekend. He’s a good defender and will have a huge impact coming off the bench for one of the CIML’s best teams. I mean, just look at this stroke….
