2018 Milford Mill Academy (MD) G Ugo Obasi completely understands this.
With no offers to this point, he looks to build off a successful high school campaign to turn it into something this upcoming July.
“My last high school season went great. I think it was because the work was very efficient. We worked out as much as we could. We just did stuff to get our team in-sync together and build chemistry. We took no days off and we went full speed every day. Now I’m just looking to build upon that,” said the 6-1 guard.
“My role on the team was definitely to be a leader,” continued Obasi. When someone would get down on themselves because they missed a shot or turned the ball over, my role was to get them back in-sync and back on the same page, to pick their head back up because the game isn’t over. My job is to just be a leader on and off the court.”
Now in the summer with Crusader Nation, the Milford Mill guard displays his ability to switch between roles as he moves to the shooting guard position away from the leadership position at point guard during high school stints.
“My first step [is my best skill] because it’s what creates for my team and also myself,” said Obasi.
The guard sees a lot of improvement to be at the top of his game even with skills that may already be strong.
“I definitely want to improve on my finishing abilities. I get to the rim a lot, and when I get fouled, I think I should be able to push through that contact to make it a potential ‘and-1’ play instead of just shooting two free throws,” said the Crusader Nation player.
Despite no offers yet, Obasi holds interest from Drexel, East Carolina, Coastal Carolina, and Towson, a team that will be hosting him on a visit on June 30th.
He does hold plenty of camp invites from numerous schools including Montclair State, Queen’s (NC), Marietta, and Rider.
“What I want to show off to the college coaches is definitely my ability to find teammates. I understand that college basketball isn’t about yourself anymore; it’s about playing team-ball, so I would like to get my teammates involved. I want to show the college coaches my ability to get the big man involved and guard players involved with the kick-out so we can score by-will,” said the guard.
Obasi is definitely a player that puts his team first and looks to develop success in those around him alongside himself.
Watch out for this Milford Mill guard as he gains more opportunities to showcase his talent as the summer rolls on.
