Ashland offered the sharpshooting point guard last summer, and he’s seeing some Division I interest roll-in from Belmont, Lipscomb, Indiana State, and Ball State.
“Those schools have been texting me, and Indiana State came and watched me work out; their assistant and head coach,” said Mitchell. “And my coach last year, his son coaches at Ball State, so there’s a connection there.”
With his grassroots career coming to an end in just one month, Mitchell knows this is his time to shine.
“This is basically what I’ve been working for all my life, so I hope everything comes together in July, and all the hard work pays off,” said Mitchell. “I’ve gained weight and I’ve gotten a lot stronger, so I’m pretty excited about July — I think I’m going to make some noise.”
A skilled point guard who can shoot and pass very well, Mitchell defined his playing style in his own words to PHO.
“I think I’m good at distributing the ball coming off pick-and-rolls, and looking for the open guy,” he said. “I’m a knockdown 3-point shooter and my pull-up jumper is nice. I can shoot off-the-dribble well on fast breaks, and also coming off screens.”
This summer with Ohio Basketball Club, Mitchell says he wants to showcase his ability to get to the basket, and pick up some more offers.
“The main thing is just putting on weight, I’ve gained 10 pounds since the season ended because we’ve been lifting with the football team. But that’s my main focus now, I want to get to 185, so that I can get to the rack easier,” said Mitchell.
“My spring has gone pretty well so far. I got to play in front of a decent amount of coaches. I think we’ll really pull together this July, and some goals are I just hope to get some D1 offers.”
