He was dominant at times last weekend against some good competition at the Grand View Team Camp. And though several schools have already reached out the the athletic wing, he could become a guy that higher level schools may want to pursue.
“I’ve gotten a couple letters from some schools around here. And then a D3 school in Minnesota has been texting me for two or three weeks now. Grand View, Briar Cliff, Coe and Central have been in contact with me from around here,” said Clayton, who feels he could be a Division II player.
We agree.
“I think I could go D2, especially with my skill-set. But I just have to get better, and get noticed more during those NCAA live periods. And hopefully I can play in a couple of those events.”
He was doing it all last weekend in Des Moines; slashing, shooting, rebounding, swiping steals and blocking shots.
“I think I’ve developed more of a jumper at mid-range and 3,” said Clayton. “And last year I was more of a driver, trying to get to the hoop every time, and now I have a pull-up jumper and I can knock-down shots more than I could last year.”
Clayton has never been affiliated with a grassroots program in the past, but he did play with one of Iowa’s best teams, Kingdom Hoops Elite 17U, in New York two weekends ago.
“I’ve only played with them once, and I might play with them a couple more tournaments moving forward. It was a good experience. I’ve never been to New York before. My role was that I came off the bench as the seventh or eighth man and I didn’t really score that much, but I rebounded well and played defense well,” said Clayton, who explained to PHI his goals for the summer.
“Hopefully I can just get better so I can lead my team to a winning record next season. And then get noticed by some colleges that haven’t seen me yet.”
