But he was wearing Hawkeyes shorts all day Saturday at the Drake Team Camp, and referred to his dad’s team with “we’re” when discussing his recruitment with PHI last weekend at the Knapp Center in Des Moines.
“Honestly I haven’t really thought about it (recruitment) that much. I’m around all the Iowa guys all the time. I talk to guys my age that we’re recruiting, and I talk to guys a year older than me that we’re recruiting. I’m probably pretty set as a Hawkeye, but I haven’t officially announced that yet,” said Patrick, who has seen some outside mail from different schools — but nothing too serious.
“I’ve gotten a couple letters, I’ve gotten one from Arizona and some schools like that.”
The 6-foot-8 wing towers over both his dad and his brother Connor – a Hawkeye-commit from 2017. Patrick defines his playing style as versatile.
“I can play stretch-four if I have to, and I can come out and handle the ball at times if I have to,” said Patrick.
“I like to go out and dribble, and I like to shoot 3s, and setting up my teammates too, I like to get them involved. And then just rebounding and blocking shots. I’m just overall really versatile.”
Last season as freshman with one of the state’s most talented teams, Patrick averaged 4.7 points, 2.3 rebounds and a block per game.
“I had an OK year at times, but my expectations were way higher for myself,” said Patrick. “Next year I’m going to look to handle the ball a lot more, and just become more of a threat on offense, and just take on a way bigger role offensively and defensively. And I’m looking to be more of a leader as well.”
A player with a very diverse set of skills, it’s been his shot-blocking and leadership that have been strikingly good this offseason. He says playing with a crop of older guys last season helped mold him into a better leader.
“I just try to lead and be the best leader I can, and just help out the other guys,” said Patrick. “I had a lot of great leaders help me out with West last season, like Connor (McCaffery), Wali (Parks), Tanner (Lohaus) and all those guys.”
He says his role with the Iowa Barnstormers’ 15U squad is to be the team’s leader. And the goal for the summer: simply to win.
“I want to win,” said Patrick. “Just win as many games as we can is the goal.”
